Moreno Valley Councilman Resigns After Arrest

It’s been no secret that Moreno Valley councilman Marcelo Co has been one of the targets of a joint federal/state investigation into political corruption in that town.  His home had been searched by the FBI in April 2013.  Last week, Councilman Co was arrested on seemingly unrelated state charges of fraudulently pocketing some $15,000 in home support services intended to aid his aging mother (who was apparently in the Philippines at the time).  The Riverside District Attorney filed eight felony counts against him, among them grand theft, fraud and false claims.  Co resigned from office the next day.

It’s odd that the authorities would rush to arrest Co on relatively minor charges while the larger investigation continues.  My guess is that they began to view Co as a flight risk, and wanted to force him to surrender his passport, which is a typical bond condition.
