Dinesh D’Souza Indicted for Illegal Campaign Contributions

Conservative pundit Dinesh D’Souza was charged last week in New York with violating federal campaign finance laws.

According to the indictment, in 2012 D’Souza circumvented the $2,500 limit on individual contributions to federal candidates by having straw donors contribute $20,000 to a senate candidate  and then reimbursing the donors.  Based on press reports, it appears that the candidate was Wendy Long, a Republican who lost to Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) in 2012.  D’Souza could have legally donated a maximum of only $5,000 to the candidate ($2,500 for the primary and $2,500 for the general election.”

D’Souza’s attorney described his client’s conduct as “an act of misguided friendship” and said that D’Souza had never intended to corruptly influence candidate Long.
